Virus activity on the rise

January 29th, 2010

In the past few weeks, several people I know have been infected with computer viruses. All of them had antivirus software installed.

It turns out that they did not have the latest Windows updates. And somehow their antivirus software was disabled by the virus or just did not catch it.

I did not witness the point of infection, but one person says they just opened an excel file from a friend. Two others got a pop-up that they had an infection and to “click here” to remove it. Well clicking “here” just made it worse.

These incidents hightlighted to me the importance of
1.) making sure that your computers operating system and your apps are current with all the patches.

2.) educating people on all the latest attack vectors for viruses, spyware, etc.

3.) making sure that your antivirus software actually works and that it can stop a virus whether it’s from the web, email, or media.

First post

January 29th, 2010

Well, I decided to start a blog to see what was involved in setting one up.
I’m typing my first post using the wordpress app for the iPhone. I’m using the version 1 app due to all the negative reviews for the version 2 app.

The goal for this blog is to post answers to tech questions that come up often. I also want to get more involved with web development, so I figure, a blog is a good place to get me feet wet.
